Leader of Bangladesh Nationalist Party Sworn in as PM
The oath of office was administered by President Mohammed Shahabuddin at a ceremony held in front of the parliament building in Dhaka. Rahman was sworn in alongside a 49-member Cabinet.
Earlier in the day, 297 lawmakers took their seats in the 13th parliament following last week’s elections—the first since the 2024 uprising that ended the 15-year rule of the Awami League. The elections marked Bangladesh’s first elected government in 18 months, after an interim administration led by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus had governed since August 8, 2024.
Former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina fled to India on August 5, 2024, amid political unrest. The Awami League was barred from participating in the recent vote. The BNP and its allies secured a two-thirds majority, winning 212 of the 300 contested seats. Elections for three constituencies were postponed, while 50 additional seats reserved for women will be allocated proportionally based on party vote share.
Foreign dignitaries attended the inauguration ceremony, including Mohamed Muizzu, Tshering Tobgay, Ahsan Iqbal, and Seema Malhotra.
More than 127.6 million Bangladeshis were eligible to vote in the election, which recorded a turnout of 59.44%, significantly higher than the 41.8% participation rate in January 2024. A concurrent referendum on constitutional reforms passed with more than 60% support.
